My problem with The Country Wife is that Wycherley's writing has none of the charm of his contemporary, George Etherege. When I read The Man of Mode, I was delighted by it. The writing was charming and funny, and the characters were likeable. In The Country Wife, the characters are obnoxious, and although the writing is clever, it lacks warmth/5.
Dec 08, · I enjoyed this book until the last 25 pages. When I was done I was so irritated that the author would write such an awful ending. I feel like now I wish I never read the book because it allows acceptance of domestic abuse as long as there are mitigating circumstances.
