The city of New Orleans, Louisiana is built on timber piles. Residential buildings, commercial buildings and the Superdome as well as paved highways in New Orleans are supported on timber piles. New Orleans, however, is not alone in its use of timber piles to support highways. The highest ever recorded design load for timber piles in U.S. The spar tree and steam donkey, or donkey engine (the common nickname for a steam-powered winch, or logging engine), became a mechanical spar pole that could be brought to any mechanical spar pole used hydraulics to raise the pole and a combustion engine to run the technology was further enhanced with the feller buncher, a machine with metal tracks that cuts limbs and stacks.

The contributors take a hard look at the economic and political forces in the international tropical timber trade. An ecologically rapacious emphasis on growth, coupled with politically powerful distribution coalitions, give little chance for policy reforms and no hope of radical change. 40% of the world’s commercially cut timber is used for the production of paper. Pulpwood plantations and mills endanger natural habitats. Over 30 million acres of forest are destroyed annually.
